Love the Gulf
Tallahassee is homebase for our agency, so the Gulf of Mexico is in our backyard. More than being our beloved neighbor, the Gulf is a part of our way of life, a vital piece of ecology to steward, and a distinctive resource that is inseparable with the well-being of people, businesses and towns that we know by name.
We are supporting and spearheading Gulf recovery efforts because we are compelled by the need, and because we know that doing good is good business. There is so much to be done.
Among our efforts, 3 Smart Girlz is excited to be coordinating volunteer chaplains to visit the coastline. Coastal communities have been holding their breath for months now: waiting for oil to land, fearful of both short- and long-term impacts, and waiting for help. We know good will come from sending chaplains to land on the same shores in suffering communities. Their gifts of presence and witness will be of service during their visits to the Gulf, and they will bring back real stories of the region to their home communities.
Smart Girl Penny Alsop, who is a student in the Upaya Buddhist Chaplaincy Program, already has slated a core team from the U.S. and Canada to initiate the work. More volunteers are welcome, as are business partners and individual sponsors. Our collective outreach can be powerful. If you would like more information about how to join this project, contact Penny directly at penny@3smartgirlz.com.

Love the Gulf Blog Carnival
Smart Girl Deb Rox is coordinating a blog carnival to collect posts about the Gulf before and after the disaster. Storytelling through the power of social media raises awareness, promotes connection and understanding, inspires healing and transforms expression into action. A diverse spectrum of posts are adding depth and reach to the growing picture of what is happening in the Gulf and why it matters. Please join the effort by linking your own blog post, photos, videos or other social media, and by reading the work of others.
