Business with Heart: Indie Art

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article today about the new Indieshop model of marketing independent fashion designers in a neo Home Shopping Network way, like Etsy meets cable TV.  We’re excited about mechanisms that link artisans with new customers.

It’s not the easiest path in the world, but creatives who make their living through their art are luminous beacons.  We surround ourselves with as much of their art, music and words as we can, because it inspires us to live true to our own principles and our own art.  Indie rocks, in every way.

Our indie artist clients use 3SG in several ways.  They are some of the most thoughtful and lean businesses we know–often because they have to be–so strategic planning is a must. Knowing which of their products is marketable and how much time and money to invest in different activities can make or break a creative in the same way it can any small business.  Marketing, PR and web outreach are all necessary–and for a sole proprietor, the investment in help more than pays for itself.

We also can implement business processes to give their creative businesses structure, especially important during times of growth, or can help them outsource some of the tasks that suck time and attention away from their art.

Sometimes we end up partnering with them on 3SG projects.  Because we just can’t get enough.

Have you met these amazing women? Some of our favorite indie creatives:

Regularly stomping at the House of Blues in Orlando, swoon-worthy composer and performer Ruth King.

Jewelry designer Quincie Hamby exudes soul gorgeousness and transfers it through her art to her supporters.

Penny made us jealous with reports from working with the brilliant author and writing instructor Natalie Goldberg in New Mexico.
